முப்பத்தியேழு ஆண்டு சேவைக்குப் பிறகு பேராசிரியர் நல்லகண்ணுவின் பிரிவுபசார விழா. மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் வெற்றிச்செல்வன் தலைமை. பேராசிரியர், தொலைக்காட்சிப் பேட்டியில் — தமிழில் தோற்று மனம் வருந்திப் போன ஜயக்குமார் என்ற மறக்க முடியாத மாணவன் பற்றி பேசுகிறார். அன்று மாலை, கலெக்டரின் பரிசை விரிக்கிறார் — ஒரு புகைப்படம், ஒரு கடிதம், பழைய வகுப்பறையின் ஒரு பெயர்.
நாற்பது ஆண்டுகால 'வாடாமலர்' பத்திரிகை மறைந்து போகும் நிலையில் இருக்கிறது. கனகா, சிங்கப்பூரிலிருந்து விரைந்து வந்து அதைக் காப்பாற்ற முயற்சி செய்கிறாள். அனைவரும் அதே பழைய ஆலோசனைகளைத் தருகையில், வானதி என்ற இளம் பெண் ஒரு கழுகின் கதையைச் சொல்ல வருகிறாள்.
ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும், அலமி ஆச்சி சிங்கப்பூரில் இருக்கும் கணவர் ராமநாதன் செட்டியாருக்கு கடிதம் எழுதச் சொல்லுகிறாள் — தன் ஊரினர் 'ராமாயணத்து ராமனே' என்று போற்றும் மனிதருக்கு. வருடங்கள் கழித்து சாவித்திரி ஆச்சியின் பார்சலைச் செட்டியாருக்குக் கொடுக்க சிரங்கூனுக்குப் போகும்போது, ஒரு நடுத்தர வயதுப் பெண் கதவு திறக்கிறாள். சில கௌரவங்கள், சொல்லாமலே காப்பாற்றப்படுகின்றன.
சிங்கப்பூரின் ஐம்பத்திரண்டாவது சுதந்திர தினம். சென்டோசா தீவுத்திடலில், எண்பது வயது ஆசிரியர் மணிவாசகத்துக்கு 'நல்லாசிரியர்' விருது. அவரது மகன் விவேகானந்தனும் பேரன் செல்வமும் கூட. மணிவாசகத்தின் நினைவுகளில் 1943-ன் நேதாஜி உரை, விவேகானந்தரின் சிகாகோ உரை, பாரதி, ஔவை — அனைவரின் குரல்களும் எழுகின்றன. கடைசியில் விவேகானந்தனின் மனதில் எழும் தெளிவான முடிவு — எங்கு நம் இடம் என்பதை அந்த மாலை வேளை சொல்லி விடுகிறது.
கலிபோர்னியாவின் மவுண்டன் வியூவில் ஒரு கிட்டி பார்ட்டி நினைவுகளின் வாசலாய் திறக்கிறது. மேகலா — இருபத்து மூன்று வருஷம் அமெரிக்காவில் வாழ்ந்தவள் — தனது மகள் துளசியை தீபக்கிற்குக் கல்யாணம் செய்துவைத்து, கொரோனா காலத்தின் கொடுமையில் இந்தியாவுக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்திருக்கிறாள். பின் ஒரு நீண்ட வாட்ஸ்அப் துளசியிடம் இருந்தே வருகிறது: பட்டங்கள் ஒரே ஆகாயத்தில் பறந்தாலும் ஒவ்வொன்றும் தனித்தனி உயரத்தில் பறக்கிறது, விதை மண்ணில் வேர்பிடித்து வியாபிப்பதற்காகவே இருக்கிறது என்று. அமைதியாக ஒளிரும் ஒரு தாய்-மகள் கதை.

சென்னையிலிருந்து மெல்பர்னுக்கு மருத்துவம் படிக்கச் செல்லும் ஒரே மகன் முகுந்தை விட்டுப் பிரிய கமலாவின் மனம் தயங்குகிறது. நாலு மாதங்கள் கழித்து அவனைப் பார்க்க ஆஸ்திரேலியாவுக்குப் பயணம். அங்கே — தனது சோப்பை எடுத்து வாங்காத பிள்ளை, இப்போது தனது சமையல், சலவை, தோழமை, படிப்பு என அனைத்தையும் அழகாகச் சமாளிக்கும் இளைஞனாக மாறி இருக்கிறான். கமலாவுக்குத் தான் அங்கு அநாவசியமாகப்படுகிறது. டாண்டினங் சிவா–விஷ்ணு கோயிலில் பேச்சாளர் சுகி சிவம் கோபுரப் பொம்மைகளை — பெற்றோர்களை — பற்றிய ஒரு உருவகத்தைச் சொல்லும் போது, கமலாவின் மனத்தின் அழுக்கான எண்ணங்கள் கழன்று அங்கே பிரகாசம் குடி கொள்கிறது. அவள் நெஞ்சம் நெகிழ்கிறது.
A story Banooravi's father told her: a great mango tree in an orchard, a boy who comes to play under it, and the tree's giving — first fruits to sell, then branches for a house, then the trunk itself. When the storm finally fells the tree on its own one night, the boy weeps, *for it was the tree that helped him at times of need.* Banooravi closes: *the mango tree is supposed to be our parents — they gave us their unconditional love, until their last breath.*
A farmer loses the silver watch his mother gave him in the hay of his farmhouse. A whole crowd of boys searches noisily and gives up. Only after all of them have left, in the quiet, does one small boy find it — *by sitting still on the ground, and listening for the ticking.* A bedtime story about why a peaceful mind reaches what a confused mind cannot.
Secondary school. Banooravi was the funny one, the dancer, the one who cracked jokes — and there was a rich girl in class who showed off her car and her chocolates and looked through Banooravi as if she weren't there. Until the day of the maths exam, when the rich girl forgot her geometry box. And later, when Banooravi was cast as the princess in the school drama but had no rich dresses — the rich girl came forward with hers. *Friendship is never anything but sharing. In fact, it is the new energy to our soul.*
*"Banoo… in our life, we should be like a pencil."* Her father said this once, and the little girl didn't understand. Years later, as he sat writing his ledger entries one afternoon, she asked him to explain. And he explained — patiently, one quality after the next — *the hand that guides, the sharpening that hurts but improves, the eraser that corrects, the graphite hidden inside, and the impression every action leaves.* A story about a father, a daughter, and the five lessons a pencil can teach.
College days, six kilometres each way on foot. A physics practical with Vernier calipers that wouldn't give the right reading. The lecturer wouldn't let Banooravi go home until she got it right. By the time she handed in her record note it was seven in the evening, and the buses were gone, and she didn't have the fare. She started running. And then — *"Banoo… Banoo!"* — there was her milkman Arumugam, riding by on his cycle, hair in a bun, white veshti, pan-stained smile. A story about trusting the right person, and a long walk home that turned out fine.
Age seven. Sports day. The elder sister, who was also her teacher, said *do not behave like that — everyone is watching me.* But Banoo was determined. She wormed her way into the spoon-race against girls much older. The lemon fell off her spoon before the finish line. She didn't reach the pole. She sat down to one side and waited — but when the organisers announced the winners' names, they announced her name too. *They wanted to entertain me as I showed up my enthusiasm, and they got their approval to take part too!* A story about how perseverance itself can be the prize.
The moral science teacher held up a glass of water and asked: *Students, how much does this glass weigh?* Fifty grams. A hundred. *And what if I hold it for some more time?* Nothing — the same. *And for two more hours?* Your arms might ache. *And for a whole day?* — A childhood lesson Banooravi never forgot: about how the burden is not the weight, but the holding.
One time her brother brought home a little brown puppy with white patches. *Amma* shouted, said no — but the children begged. He stayed, was named *Mani,* and was fed rice and milk. One summer holiday, with the older siblings away, a thief came in the night and snatched Amma's gold chain. Mani barked and chased the thief out — and then quietly, in the dark, pulled the blanket: *wow! my mom's chain was there.* Half of it, anyway. *I felt that animals are the best guards.*
Kuwait, 1982. Banooravi's first year abroad. The doorbell rang in the night — Ramadan time, when Palestinians and the poor came knocking after iftar to ask for money. She shouted in Arabic through the door: *Maakku, Maakku — Rhoo, Rhoo* (No, no — go away). And went to sleep. In the morning, when she opened her front door, she found her clothes — fallen off her balcony in the night wind — neatly folded on the doormat. The young Egyptian neighbour from downstairs had come up to return them.
Singapore, 1990. Tekka Market on the morning of *Vishu.* Three mangoes for two dollars — but Banooravi, in Tamil to her friend, called the old Chinese vendor a *kizhavan* — old man, greedy old man. *Madam,* he replied gently, in perfect Tamil, *every body grows older day by day, and has to become kizhavan (old man) or kizhavi (old lady) at one stage.* She apologised. She has never forgotten. A scar lasts longer than a single sorry.
Banooravi the child once played in the Chettiar bungalows — and her friend Sita's mother, taking pity on her plain home-made shirt, brought out armfuls of beautiful Malayan dresses for her to take home. She ran home thrilled. Amma's face went red. *Banoo… can you accept things from others?* And Banoo cried, and Amma sat her down. *We may not have enough money, comforts or luxury — but we have good enough to wear, to eat, and to live with so as to meet up our requirements.* The dresses went back, with a note of thanks.
குவைத்து வாழ்க்கைக் காலத்து ஒரு பயண நினைவு. திருப்பதியானைக் கண்ணாரக் காண வேண்டும் என்ற பானுரவியின் நெடுநாள் கனவு நிறைவேறுகிறது — மலையிறங்கும் வழியில் காரின் கதவு திறந்து, கணவர் ரவியையும் இரட்டைக் குழந்தை ஒன்றையும் சாலையில் வீழ்த்துகிறது. இருவருக்கும் சிராய்ப்பு மட்டுமே. பயணம் முழுதும் அனந்தாழ்வாரின் கடப்பாரை, நீளாதேவியின் கூந்தல் காணிக்கை போன்ற தலபுராணங்களும், தன் பக்தனைக் காக்க ஓடிவரும் ஏழுமலையானின் பேரருளும் பின்னிக் கிடக்கின்றன.
